The Anna Deavere Smith Pipeline Project is the newest research and artistic work by acclaimed playwright and actress Anna Deavere Smith. The Pipeline Project examines the lack of opportunity and resources for many young people living in poverty and how these circumstances often lead them into the criminal justice system.
Using her signature form of documentary theater and through interviews with hundreds of individuals, Ms. Smith has developed Notes From The Field: Doing Time in Education. In this new theatrical work, Ms. Smith seeks to understand why we have let so many of our nation’s children drop out of school; suffer in regards to their physical and mental health; and wind up incarcerated in juvenile facilities.
In 2015, Ms. Smith performed an in-progress version of Notes From The Field: Doing Time In Education in critically-acclaimed and sold-out runs at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and at Center Stage in her hometown, Baltimore. Charles McNulty of the LA Times named the Berkeley production one of the best theater experiences of 2015. Additionally, Notes From The Field: Doing Time In Education has been profiled by NewsHour, NPR, The Washington Post, and The Baltimore Sun, and most recently, The Nation.
